The Pompeo bill also called “The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act 2015” and by opponents as “The Deny Americans the Right to Know Act.” Opponents of the bill considered it a dangerous bill for our food supply and the public’s right to access safe food. State leaders for mandatory labeling, around the country actively oppose the bill. Over the last month It sailed through the Ag committee as assumed it would and pass through House vote on Thursday 275 -150.
If passed by the Senate, the bill will allow:
- ‘Natural’ to be redefined to contain genetically engineered material
- Preempt state rights to mandate labeling
- Voluntary labeling vs mandatory
- Preempts states to not allow state authorities to deal with the seeds to protect the state’s’ environment
Here’s an excerpt from an article from the Environmental Working Group: “The bill originally only prevented states from labeling products with GMOs. The version to be considered this week goes a step further, prohibiting state and local governments from protecting the environment and public health from the side effects of the production of GMO crops. The bill also allows companies to make “natural” claims on foods with GMOs and blocks state efforts to prohibit these misleading claims.
So it may not directly affect you having to add or subtract information from your label, but could minimize your products overall message to the public, like stating All Natural when it includes corn sweetener from corn that is genetically modified.
Darryl can work with you on your product label and show you what is marketing information and what the FDA legal requirements are.
