As consumers, we read labels more closely today than ever before. Consumers are trending towards healthier eating and a better understanding of the importance of putting good things in the body.

At the same time, manufacturers have been busy and creative placing terms and words on packaging, that could result in you making a purchase under a false claim. For example, Dreamfield’s Pasta Co. made claims of producing a low-carb pasta with fewer digestible carbohydrates and having a lower glycemic index than traditional pasta. Well, they got caught and slapped with a $7.9 million fine and class action settlement. You can read more about the slap at here.

Words like “All Natural,” “No GMO” and others have been tossed around so much the consumer makes the purchase while not really understanding the true meaning. Such terms are being used while at the same time manufacturers are stretching the guidelines that are loose defined in the first place.  Keeping your ingredient statement minimal and using ingredients with words that can be pronounced is the wave of the future.  Finally, major manufacturers are eliminating artificial ingredients from their products as a result of customer demand and working to de-clutter their label.  Consumers are demanding better and manufacturers are responding.
