Depending on your age, you probably have great childhood memories of a particular ice cream shop you visited as a treat with the family. Here’s a list with a time line of the early adopters of the ones I’m familiar with. 

1818 – Breyer’s, founded by William Breyer in Philadelphia at home, then delivering by wagon  

1861 – Bassett’s, founded by Louis Dubois Bassett in his backyard in Salem NJ using a mule-turn churn

1894 – Hershey’s, founded by Jacob, Isaac, Paris and Eli Hershey, 3rd cousins once removed from Milton Hershey who started in chocolate  

1925 – Howard Johnson’s, founded by Howard Deering Johnson in a pharmacy in Quincy MA

1935 – Friendly’s, founded by brothers Prestley and Curtis Blake with a shop in Springfield MA

1940 – Dairy Queen or “DQ”, started by Sherb Noble opening a restaurant in Joliet IL, the soft serve was developed by John Fremont in 1938

1945 – Baskin-Robbins, founded by brother-in-laws Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins & merging their respective parlours in Glendale CA

1961 – Häagen-Dazs, started by Reuben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx NY

1970 – Graeter’s, founded by Louis C Graeter in Cincinnati OH

1973 – Steve’s, founded by Steve Herrell (my inspiration to make ice cream) opened Steve’s ice cream in Somerville MA

1975 – Emack & Bolio’s, founded by Robert Rook, a self proclaimed hippie opening in Boston MA

1978 – Ben & Jerry’s, founded by Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield in a renovated gas station in Burlington VT

1978 – Darryl’s Homemade Ice Cream Factory, founded by Darryl David selling in a original 1930’s era drug store in Toledo OH

1980 –  Herrell’s, founded by Steve Herrell opening a shop in North Hampton MA three years after he sold the original Steve’s in 1977

1980 – Stroh’s, builds a new facility on maple St in Detroit, but originally started by Julius Stroh in 1933 alongside the beer plant
